Custom Tampers is a small pipe tamper business started by Charles Perry, pipe smoker and collector, and Chris Melhorn, woodworker and wood turner. Charles and Chris work together at their real jobs for EPRI PEAC Corporation. One day, Charles stopped by Chris's office and asked, "Do you think you could make one of these?" Charles showed Chris a pipe tamper. Chris replied, "I'm sure I can!" And the picture to the left is the result.

This first, all-wood tamper, was made from Cherry. Charles liked it. Since that time, Charles and Chris have teamed up to design many different varieties of tampers. Some of these designs incorporate wood with brass, briar with brass, acrylics with brass, and some even have internal picks and pipe tools.
